Lombok, the sister island to Bali, is fast becoming a popular alternative to Bali. It offers a vastly different cultural experience and is home to a plethora of yet to be discovered beaches, bays and waterfalls. In South Lombok, Kuta, a once sleepy fishing village known for its surf breaks is also coming of age. A few years activities were limited to surfing and bintangs in the few beach bars. Today there is a vast selection of activities to choose from. These are our current top 5 must dos while visiting Kuta, Lombok.
1. Night Sup Tour
Unique to South East Asia and only available in a few destinations around the world. These specialty boards are custom designed and built by the What Sup?
Lombok founders to ensure that Night time LED Stand Up Paddle is without a doubt the number
1 must do of Kuta. Glide over the shallow waters of Kuta bay as the sun sets over the mountains and dusk turns to night. The LED lights in your SUP
board will illuminate the water around and below you, attracting fish and giving you a sense of flying. Paddle along the reef and over shoals as you
make your way back to the shop. Every tour includes a cold beer, and a Sasak BBQ dinner is available for groups over 4 upon request.
2. Sunrise Surf or SUP session
It really doesn’t matter where you are in the world, nothing beats getting up before the crack of dawn and hitting the water as the first rays of the new
day break the sky. The water and sky changes colour with every passing minute and the sense of calm and peace that you will experience will set the
tone for your surf or SUP session,
as well as for the remainder of your day.
3. Learn to Fly a Kite
With windy season around the corner, what better way to flesh out your day than to do a basic introduction lesson to flying a land based trainer kite. The intro lesson uses a land based 2 line trainer kite to introduce the skills of how to steer and control a kite.
This is the first step to learning to kitesurf and opening up a whole new world of water based
thrills. Surfs blown out? Go kiting instead.
4. Sunset Cruise on Kuta Bay
Newly launched and almost ready to roll is a traditional Bugis inspired wooden boat called Senja. Senja has been re-fitted to accommodate up to 25 people
comfortably over 2 decks. With hammock netting strung between the outriggers, it provides a variety of options for relaxing as you cruise Kuta Bay
with a cold drink in your hand. Stop and have a swim, explore Skull Beach and pick up shells before venturing out of the bay to watch the sunset over
the horizon while bobbing gently on the swell. Senja meets at Bar Nyulu Tuesday – Sunday at 4, departing 4.15pm from the fishermen’s jetty. Tickets
will be available at most cafes and accommodation venues from end of April.
5. Wed Nights Happy Hour at Milk and Party at the Bus Bar
Want to know where you will find all the locals and expats together in one hit? Milk Cafe and the Bus Bar are 2 independent venues that each run their own series of successful
nights throughout the week. Wednesday however the stars align with Milk Espresso kicking things off with live music, half price beers and cocktails
from 5-8pm, after which people roll on to the Bus Bar. Continue the drinking with killer tunes, as the DJ night provides the perfect warm up and late
night party session combo. The Bus Bar is well known for its resident DJs and touring guests, providing quality house/tech house/techno vibes.
